Roman Castles are famous for wine-production and, like Tuscan hills,
for wine tourism too, since many centuries. The centre of the production
are the Albani hills and the territory of Viterbo (the ancient Tuscia)
where the tradition of wine began already in Etruscan period.
Important also the hills of Sabina, along Tevere river, in the provinces
of Rome and Rieti.
The "king" of Albani hills is the Doc Castelli Romani,
with the local varieties like the Frascati. The white wine is, surely,
the majority of the production, made with grapes Malvasia and Trebbiano.
Red wines are produced above all in Ciociaria, between Rome and
Frosinone, with the vineyard called Cesanese.
After the reclamation of the Pontine marshes, the zone of Latina
began own wine production, with grapes Sangiovese, Trebbiano and
Merlot. The "Doc Aprilia" is an example of the activity
of this land, but also the territory of Circeo is becoming famous
for the many kinds of wines. Velletri, Marino, Genazzano are some
examples of wine varieties of this territory, famous not only for
the wine but also for the monuments and the ancient and evocative
atmosphere.
Like this place, also the land called "Tuscia", at north
of Rome, in the province of Viterbo: tufaceous mountains and ancient
Etruscan tombs, medieval villages and lakes are the setting of the
typical restaurants of this zone, where it's possible to eat local
specialities and wines, all with low prices.
The " Est! Est! Est!" of Montefiascone, a wonderful village
on Bolsena lake, is an excellent wine, included in the Doc "Colli
Etruschi Viterbesi".
From Tarquinia to Cerveteri, famous for the wonderful necropolis
with painted and sculptured tombs, there's the zone of Etruscan
vines, cultivated already by Etruscans, who drank much wine, like
Greeks and Romans, during the banquets. |
