It's difficult summarize shortly the history of the big wine-production
in Piedmont: the hilly landscape, very good for vines, and ancient
traditions have created wines which are famous in all the world.
So we are trying to give only some information about the important
productions of this region.
The most important wine-districts of Piedmont are, on the right
bank of Po river, the Langhe and the Monferrato; on the north side,
instead, there're, under the mountains, the provinces of Cuneo,
Torino, Biella, Novara and Vercelli.
The sedimentary deposits of Monferrato and Langhe have favoured
the cultivation of vines and the creation of important wines, as
Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo d'Alba and many others. The vines are
cultivated according to the altitude, following ancient methods,
thanks to the ability of the farmers.
The Monferrato is characterized by an evocative landscape, with
Tanaro river, in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria: here the
most important wine is the "Red Barbera". The province
of Asti is famous for the production of Barbera and of Moscato;
instead the "high" Monferrato produces wines as Cortese,
Dolcetto and Brachetto. Acqui, Ovada, Gavi are three of the most
famous centres where it's possible to taste good wine.
On the Tortonesi hills, in the province of Alessandria, there're
the influences of Oltrepò, a land near Pavia, in Lombardy.
The lands called "Langhe", between Liguria and Monferrato,
in the province of Cuneo, from 400 to 800 m. of altitude, are the
country of inimitable wines like Barolo and Barbaresco Docg, whose
names derive from the villages near Alba, where they are produced.
They are red wines, good with red meat and game, the typical food
of this land.
The "Roero" is another important wine-district, with important
production - centres like Bra and Canale. Here is cultivated the
variety called "Nebbiolo", but the white grapes Arneis
and Favorita too.
The zone under the Alps, in the north of the region, is famous for
the cultivation of Nebbiolo grapes, which give wines as the Gattinara
and the Ghemme Docg, but also of white varieties (for example the
Erbaluce) in the country around Caluso. |
