Called, until few time ago, the "European wine-cellar",
Apulia has a long wine tradition, which go back to the age of ancient
Greece.
The province of Foggia, in the middle of "Tavoliere",
is the first wine district of the region. San Severo is famous for
the Doc production of the homonymous wine, red and white; the country
of Lucera is another wine district famous for the production of
the wine "Cacc'e mmite" Doc.
Other important Doc red wines are the "Orta Nova" (red
and rosé), the "Cerignola" and the "Aleatico
of Apulia".
The province of Bari has a soil excellent for the cultivation of
vines. Famous red wines, as the Red "Canosa", the Red
"Barletta" and the "Castel del Monte", are produced
just in the north side of this province. In the south of the territory
of Bari, instead, are produced other red traditional wines, as the
"Primitivo" and the "Black Bombino", and whites
as the "Pampanuto", the "Palumbo" and the "White
Bombino". Other important productions of this province are
the "Gioia del Colle" with many varieties, the white "Gravina",
the "Locorotondo" and the sweet "Moscato" of
Trani.
The vineyard of Salento is divided into the provinces of Brindisi,
Taranto and Lecce. In the first one are produced wines as the "Verdeca"
the white "d'Alessano"; the second one is the country
of red and rosé wines, with the vineyard called "Primitivo".
In Apulia there're many Doc productions as the "Alezio",
the "Brindisi" and the "Copertino" (in the varieties
red and rosé), the "Galatina", the "Noverano",
the "Lizzano" and the "Martina" (or "Martina
Franca"), also sparkling, the "Primitivo" of Manduria,
red, the "Salice Salentino" and, finally, the "Squinzano".
